Categorical privacy policy
Last updated: 16 October 2026
Categorical ("the app") is made by Jonathan Barratt, a sole developer based in France. You can contact me at jon@categorical.top. For the purposes of EU and UK data protection law I am the data controller.
This policy explains what the app stores about you, why, who else handles it, and how to delete it.
What the app stores
Account details. Your email address, and a password (stored only as a one-way hash by the sign-in service; I cannot read it). If you sign in with Google, Google tells the app your email address and, usually, your name and profile picture. The app uses the email and name.
Your name in a group. An optional display name you choose, shown to the other people in your group.
Your groups and reminders. The name of each group, its members, your categories and sub categories (names, icons, colours), and your reminders: titles, notes, dates and times, repeat rules and notification settings. This is the content you create in the app.
Subscription status. If you buy Categorical Pro, Google Play handles the payment. The app and its subscription provider (RevenueCat) receive whether a group has an active subscription and when it renews. I never see your card or payment details. The subscription is linked to the group, not to your device.
On your phone only. Notification schedules, your theme choice, which group you last opened, a saved copy of your latest reminders so the app works offline, and (if you connect Google Calendar) your calendar choice and the link between reminders and calendar events. This stays on your device and is cleared when you sign out or delete your account.
What the app does not do
No advertising. No selling or sharing your information for marketing. No analytics or tracking tools. No location access. No contacts access.
Google Calendar (optional)
If you connect Google Calendar, the app asks Google for permission to add and edit events on a calendar you pick and to list your calendars. The app talks to Google directly from your phone; your calendar contents are not sent to my servers. You can disconnect at any time in Settings, and the app will ask whether to remove the events it added. You can also remove the app's access at https://myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Who handles your data
I use these services to run the app. They process data on my behalf:
- Supabase (database and sign-in): stores accounts, groups and reminders. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Hosted in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany).
- Resend (email): sends password-reset emails to your address.
- Google (sign-in, Calendar, Play): only the parts you use.
- RevenueCat and Google Play (subscriptions): only if you buy Pro.
Only the people in your group can see your group's reminders. As the developer I can technically access the database, but I do not read your content, and I only look at it if needed to fix a fault or on your request. This is not end-to-end encryption.
Why I use your data (legal basis)
To provide the app you signed up for (contract), to keep it secure and prevent abuse (legitimate interests), and to meet legal obligations such as tax records for subscriptions.
How long I keep it
For as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your data is deleted straight away: your account and membership, and any group where you were the only member, with all its categories and reminders. If other people are still in a group, the group stays for them and ownership passes to the member who joined first; the reminders you created in it remain for that group, no longer linked to you. Backups held by Supabase are overwritten on their normal cycle.
Deleting your account and your rights
You can delete your account at any time in the app: Settings, Sign out, then "Sign out and delete my account". You can also follow the steps at https://categorical.top/delete-account. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription; cancel it in Google Play first.
Under EU and UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to its use, and to move it. Email jon@categorical.top and I will reply within one month. You can also complain to the CNIL (cnil.fr), the data protection authority in France, or to the authority in your own country (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk).
Children
Categorical is not intended for anyone under 18, and I do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes
If I change this policy in a way that matters, I will update the date above and tell people in the app.
